Samsung Launches Galaxy S III in India

Samsung has launched its much-awaited Galaxy S III in India on May 31, 2012. The Galaxy S III takes on the mantle of Samsung’s flagship smartphone from the Galaxy S II with an incremental hardware bump and numerous software feature additions.

The Galaxy S III is expected to be priced at Rs 39,900, though the official price from Samsung is not yet out.

The Galaxy S III is the first smartphone to use Samsung’s Exynos quad-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz and a 4.8-inch 1280×720 pixel HD Super AMOLED display. Other specs include 1GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front cameras, Wi-Fi Direct, NFC and a massive 2,100 mAh battery.

The specs might be just an incremental upgrade but the real magic lies in all the software work that Samsung has done on top of Android ICS 4.0. One of the most unique features would be what Samsung is calling the eye tracker, which utilizes the front camera to detect whether the user is looking at the phone or not. This feature would come in handy especially while reading considering all phones usually turn off the display once the preset time elapses.

Samsung also has an Apple Siri like voice assistant called S-Voice. One can set the phone to keep listening for voice commands and activate S-Voice without touching the phone by speaking out one of the four pre-defined voice commands – “Hi Galaxy” being one of them.

There are many other software touches like a feature that recognizes people in a photograph that are already present on the user’s social networking profiles and gives the user the option to mail the photographs directly to them. And then comes the camera itself, which does face zoom, burst mode and smart shot selector, most of which are present on the HTC One X too.

The Galaxy S III will compete with the HTC One X, both of which boast similar specs and would be priced close to each other. Choosing between the two is going to be very difficult. While the One X scores higher on design and looks, the Galaxy S III has a slight edge when it comes to the brand strength, battery and some of the software tweaks.

SRK, Mamata Steal Show in KKR's Eden Party

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took the center-stage at the celebrations of Kolkata Knight Riders' maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title win at the Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata, relegating cricketers to the background.

KKR co-owner Shah Rukh, who is also the state's brand ambassador, had initially disappointed thousands of Kolkatans by not turning up for the victory parade, which started in the morning from Hazra Crossing in the city's south.

The Bollywood Badshah let the players hog all the limelight during the roadshow but once he surfaced outside the state secretariat, it became a SRK-Didi show.

Outside the secretariat, Banerjee felicitated the team with bouquets of flowers and scarves, while KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir handed over the IPL trophy to Banerjee who held it aloft for the benefit of shutterbugs.

Banerjee also donned a cotton sari with purple border, which gelled with the Knight Riders' jersey colors.

It was then that Shah Rukh entered the scene, hugged the chief minister and also held the IPL trophy aloft with her.

They all later went to the Eden Gardens where the felicitation ceremony was organized.

At the Eden, Shah Rukh broke into an impromptu jig as rock band Bhumi played some of their famous songs. He danced in Bengali traditional style, then broke into bhangra and finally did some Goanese dance steps.

He also pulled in actress Juhi Chawla, who too like him is a part owner of the KKR, and both gyrated to the tunes of the band as the chock-a-block stadium roared in appreciation.

They later went up the stage and displayed various dance steps. The duo was joined by Bengali film heartthrobs Dev and Jeet and also some KKR players.

Meanwhile, Banerjee took over the microphone and donned the mantle of host. She asked for the national anthem to be played and then shouted out instructions to the police and urged the crowd to behave.

"I request the KKR players and owners to gather at the ground where Shah Rukh will cut the 'sandesh' cake," said Banerjee, inviting the team as also Governor MK Narayanan, who was present.

Narayanan presented the players, the support staff and the owners with scarves while Banerjee handed them a gold chain each.

"Shah Rukh, Juhi and Gambhir will cut the cake and we all will sing the team song "Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo re..." said Banerjee as both the co-owners and the skipper cut the cake amid deafening roar and applause.

At Banerjee's request, the bands sang the famous Bengali song "Dhitang dhitang bole..." as players, Shah Rukh and Juhi Chawla moved their feet to the tunes of the Hemant Kumar hit.

Later on, the KKR players with the team owners took a victory lap around the ground. Shah Rukh blew kisses and waved at the spectators whose numbers had far exceeded the sitting capacity at the stadium.

Shah Rukh thanked the people of Kolkata for their support to the team. He also made a demand of his Didi (Banerjee), which she said she could not fulfill.

"If we win next time, Didi will dance for us," Shah Rukh said to Banerjee. But she turned down the request, saying: "I can sing for you, but not dance."

Shah Rukh retorted: "Didi, Bengal may be yours but Eden is ours and here we rule."

Banerjee, however, took the banter sportingly and smilingly turned down the request.

Amidst all this, the KKR champion players in whose honor the celebrations were held found themselves relegated to the background as "Didi" and "Khan dada" turned the show-stealers.

Besides Banerjee and Narayanan, many Trinamool Congress leaders and ministers, including Railways Minister Mukul Roy, were present.

Samsung Launches Galaxy S3 in Europe

Samsung Electronics Co. launches its latest Galaxy S smartphone in Europe on May 29, 2012 with the third generation model expected to be even more successful than its predecessor, which helped the South Korean company topple Apple Inc. as the world's top smartphone maker.

The S3, which tracks the user's eye movements to keep the screen from dimming or turning off while in use, hits stores in 28 European and Middle East countries, including Germany and Britain, as Samsung aims to widen the gap with Apple months ahead of its rival's new iPhone, expected in the third quarter.

The Galaxy S3, running on Google's Android operating system, boasts a 4.8-inch (12.2 cm) screen, bigger than the 3.5-inch display on the iPhone 4S and the 4.7-inch screen on HTC's (2498.TW) One X model.

Samsung introduced its first Galaxy in 2010, three years after the iPhone's debut, to counter Apple's roaring success in smartphones at a time when other rivals such as Nokia were struggling to make much impact.

Samsung sold 44.5 million smartphones in January-March — equal to nearly 21,000 every hour — giving it 30.6 percent market share. Apple sold 35.1 million iPhones, taking 24.1 percent market share.

Federal Bank to Sell Bangalore Metro Rail Tickets

India’s leading private sector bank Federal Bank Ltd tied up with the state-run Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) on May 28, 2012 for automatic fare collection at 13 stations in the northern suburb to be commissioned this year-end.

As part of the agreement, signed by bank's chief executive Shyam Srinivasan and BMRCL managing director N. Sivasailam in Bangalore, the Aluva (Kerala)-based bank will also provide top-up facility to smart card users of 'Namma Metro' in the 12.4 km northern reach from upscale Malleshwaram to Nagasandra industrial area on the city's outskirts.

"The metro stations will have automatic fare collection facility with electronic debit card machines at all the new stations and will provide commuters ATM, internet banking, mobile banking and top-up smart cards at our point of sale terminals," the bank said in a statement.

Noting that the debit-cum-travelcard being used in the first reach of the Namma metro rail between the central business district and eastern suburb was the best of its kind service to eliminate delays, Sivasailam said the company was looking forward to enhance the comfort level with extensive use of commuter-friendly facilities.

The much-delayed metro rail service began on Oct. 20, 2011 from upscale MG Road downtown to Baiyappannahalli in the eastern suburb covering a distance of 6.7 km in 12 minutes.

When completed by 2014, the 42.3-km double line electrified track in the first phase will snake through the city, with 18.1 km on east-west corridor and 24.2 km on the north-south corridor, including 8.8km underground in the city centre.
