Euro 2012: Shevchenko’s Brace Help Ukraine Beat Sweden 2-1

Ukraine legendary striker Andriy Shevchenko (35), playing his swansong tournament, scored a double to give the co-hosts a dream start to their Euro 2012 campaign in a 2-1 victory over Sweden in Kiev on June 11, 2012.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic gave Sweden the lead, scoring in the 52 minute from close range but the former AC Milan and Chelsea striker Shevchenko turned the tide for the co-hosts scoring two quick goals with his head in the 55 and 61 minute. Ukraine coach Oleg Blokhin started with Shevchenko despite critics calling for the much younger striker-Marko Devych to be in the starting eleven.

Ukraine now tops Group D with three points. In the earlier Group D match, England and France played out a 1-1 draw at Donbass Arena, Donetsk with Joleon Lescott scoring for the Three Lions and Samir Nasri finding the net for Les Bleus.

Andriy Shevchenko and Croatia’s Mario Mandzukic are now joint-top scorer of Euro 2012 with two goals each. Ukraine's next match is against France at Donbass Arena, Donetsk on June 15, 2012.
