Hurricane Sandy Looms Over US; Obama Declares Emergency

As hurricane Sandy larked over the United States’ East Coast, President Obama on October 29, 2012 declared a state of emergency in Washington, Columbia, Maryland, Massachusetts and New York. Public transports, schools and colleges remained closed in many cities and over 6000 flights were cancelled in the US today. Over 370,000 people have been evacuated from New York City low-lying areas so far.

Hurricane Sandy, described as one of the largest storm ever to hit United State, is churning directly towards New York, Washington and Boston and will be at its destructive best on Monday (October 29) and Tuesday (October 30).

UN headquarters in New York remained closed today with all meetings cancelled. The Nasdaq exchange, for the first time since 9/11, has also announced it would be closed on Monday.
