Salman's Ek Tha Tiger Breaks Opening Day Records

Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger has broken all previous box office records for a Bollywood film with a humongous opening on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012.

For the first time in the history of Indian cinema, a film has raked in an opening day collection to the excess of Rs 30 crore. Early estimates suggest the film made Rs 32 crore on August 15, which was a holiday, but the final figure could also touch Rs 35 crore. This is unprecedented for any Hindi film in Indian cinema’s 100-year-old history.

This is also the highest single-day collection for any film ever. Previously, the highest opening collection record was held by Agneepath and the highest single-day record by Ra.One. Both the records have been broken by the Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer Ek Tha Tiger.

A maddening rush could be seen at the theaters on Wednesday morning, but a lot of movie buffs had to go back disappointed because almost all the morning shows were booked in advance. The film released on a whopping 2500 screens across India and got a 100 percent response at the multiplexes in major centers. The film did extremely well in Delhi, Mumbai and Rajasthan.

The critical reviews of the film have mostly been positive, but the reactions of the fans coming out after watching the film have been mixed. Some liked it, other’s found it “over hyped” and “overrated.”

With no strong competition for weeks ahead, Ek Tha Tiger can look to a roaring run at the box office. It’s entry into the 100 crore club is a foregone conclusion.
