UEFA president Michel Platini says referees at Euro 2012 will take a strong stance against racism and they will have the power to stop games, but warns players that they will be booked if they walk off during the match.
Italy striker Mario Balotelli had threatened to walk off the pitch if he suffers racist abuse in Ukraine and Poland while families of two of England’s black players, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, have canceled plans to travel to Ukraine for the tournament, out of fear of being targeted by the neo-Nazi thugs who have vowed to attacks foreigners.
However, Platini acknowledged that racism was a problem for society across Europe, including in England and his home country, France.
Euro 2012 kicks off on June 8, 2012 with co-hosts Poland taking on Greece in a Group A encounter at the National Stadium in Warsaw.
