Banned Pakistan pacer Mohammad Asif will be released from prison on May 5, 2012 after completing his 12-month jail term in the United Kingdom.
Asif and his fellow Pakistan teammates Mohammad Aamir and then captain Salman Butt were given different jail terms by a London crown court in October, 2011 for being involved in spot-fixing during Pakistan’s tour to England in 2010.
Mohammad Asif was sentenced to 12-month, Mohammad Aamir to 6 months and Salman Butt to two and a half years jail term. The trio are also serving a five year ban by the anti-corruption tribunal of the ICC imposed in February 2011 for the same offence.
‘Asif will complete his jail term on May 5 and all formalities have been completed for his release,’ says his lawyer Ravi Gill. Apart from the jail sentence, the 3 players have also been barred from taking part in any sort of cricketing event both nationally and internationally before the completion of their five-year ban. PCB has clarified that Mohammad Asif would not be allowed to participate in any cricketing event, nor use PCB facilities.
Mohammad Asif (29) has played 38 ODIs and 23 Tests for Pakistan taking 46 wickets and 106 wickets respectively.
