Agra to Host ‘Taj Mahotsav’ 2012 From March 16–26

The annual "Taj Mahotsav (festival)" will kick start at Shilpgram, near majestic Taj Mahal in Agra, Uttar Pradesh from March 16–26, 2012. The Taj Mahotsav, which was postponed by a month due to the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, will continue till March 26.

The festival begins with a spectacular procession inspired by Mughal splendor. Bedecked elephants and camels, drum beaters, folk artists and master craftsmen together recreate the glorious past of the Mughals during the 10-day festival.

Artists from all Indian cities flock to the Taj city to display their exquisite works of art and craftsmanship during the Taj Mahotsav. The soul-stirring performances from folk artists from various states cast a spell on the visitors during the fest. Throughout the Taj Mahotsav, one can experience a profusion of folk music and dances of Dundelkhand, 'Nautanki' (Drama), 'Sapera' dance of Rajasthan, Lavani of Maharashtra. performed just the way they used to be centuries ago. Visitors join in with the folk dancers enjoying swinging to a different tune and dance style.

A 150-km car rally has been organized in Agra as part of the festival this year. The "Taj Challenge" car rally will take place on March 17, which is being supported by the Northern Motor Sports Club and Agra Motor Sports Club jointly. The toughest part of the 150-km rally would be the stretch near the Utangan River. Ambulances and fire brigade vehicles will provide the support services.

The rally will start from the Ram Lila ground near Agra Fort and finish off at the Eklavya stadium, via Bah, and Pinhat ravines.

Indian festivities can never be complete without the preparation of exotic cuisine. Some of the best and richest foods are available during this time.
