China Spring Festival 2013 Holiday Travel Rush Starts

EFT Report, Beijing: The most important Chinese holiday, Spring Festival 2013 will begin from Feb. 10, 2013. The Ministry of Railways forecast the 40-day holiday travel rush, which starts on Jan. 26, will last until March 6.

The Spring Festival, the most important occasion for a family reunion for the Chinese people, falls on the first day of the first month of traditional Chinese lunar calendar, or Feb. 10 this year. The number of passengers would reach 3.407 billion person-time during the Spring Festival 2013 travel, an 8.6% increase year on year. Airlines in China have arranged 25,000 more flights for the passengers. The flights are mainly added in tourist cities and cities with a great number of migrant workers.

The Chinese New Year is one of the most important traditional Chinese festivals with a one week public holiday.

PM to Open Delhi Sustainable Development Summit 2013 on Jan. 31

Report by Santanu Ganguly, New Delhi: The 13th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS) is set to witness focused discussions among global leaders on resource-efficient growth, climate change and protection of natural resources. The Energy and Resources Institute’s (TERI) widely popular summit will be held at Hotel Taj Palace in New Delhi from January 31-February 2, 2013. The theme of the summit is “The Global Challenge of Resource-Efficient Growth and Development”—one of the most pressing challenges faced by the world today.

The Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh will be inaugurating the summit on January 31, 2013.

RESIST: A Protest Against Delhi Gang-Rape Through Arts on Feb. 2

WHY?

The recent brutalization of a young student in New Delhi, has brought to the forefront, once again the existing violence & misogyny prevalent against women and other gendered bodies and identities across the nation. Globally, sexism, and incidents of gender violence continue to prevail.

At Engendered, we believe that art is vital to the dimension of culture and an understanding of its importance alongside political, economical and social forces in movements and acts of social change. Art can be significant in challenging and complicating the traditional boundaries and hierarchies of culture as represented by those in power.

RESIST is a call for art to be connected to its own community. RESIST will feature work that builds around the idea that "the personal is the political", that is, the notion that personal revelation through art can be a political tool. Using both alternative-underground and mainstream art-work - from new media installations, graffiti and site specific works to Punjabi Rap and hip-hop and even high fashion couture, RESIST will reveal, subvert and expand aesthetic boundaries. It will also critique notions of the 'art object' and the commodity system within which it is circulated as currency.

RESIST is planned as an afternoon and evening of live performances, art and fashion installations that registers the artist's voice creativity towards a collective protest. Starting on February 1 at Engendered's alternative gallery and space in Shahpur Jat New Delhi. The protest will be spread across four floors: a rented derelict abandoned gallery floor on the verge of re-construction, the Engendered Gallery, Residency space and the Roof Top.

Alternatively, artists may also send in their work which is of 1x1 size for the Wall of Resistance. We will unveil the Wall of Resistance on Feb 14 to mark the International Day of Action on Violence Against Women. This a completely non-commercial event and the artists may take their canvases back with them once the installation is taken down at the end of the month.

Kamal Haasan's 'Viswaroopam' Screening Stopped in Hyderabad

EFT Report, Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government stopped the release of Kamal Haasan's film "Viswaroopam" in Hyderabad on Jan. 25, 2013 after some Muslims organizations complained that the movie had hurt religious sentiments of the community.

Home Minister Sabita Indra Reddy directed police to stop the screening till Jan. 28 after some Muslim leaders called on her and demanded a ban on it.

Following this, Hyderabad police commissioner asked cinema distributors not to screen the movie at theatres in the city.

Kamal Haasan's 'Viswaroopam' 

Cyberabad police commissioner, covering areas around Hyderabad, also directed theatres not to show the movie.

Officials said the orders were issued in view of the demands by Muslim organizations. Also, there were fears of law and order problems on the occasion of Milad-un-Nabi being celebrated Friday (Jan. 25).

It was not immediately clear if the movie would be released in the rest of the state.

A day earlier, the Madras High Court declined to stay Tamil Nadu government's order suspending the release of the film.

The court asked the filmmaker to postpone the release till Jan. 28 so that it could view the same on Jan. 26.

The movie in Tamil and Telugu was scheduled for release Friday; the Hindi version, titled "Vishwaroop," is set to hit the screens on Feb. 1.

"Vishwaroopam" is produced and directed by Kamal Haasan, who has also acted in it.

Revealing the rationale behind the Summit’s central theme, Dr. Pachauri asserted, We are living in a world where the demand for several resources is growing faster than the addition to their reserves. High resource use intensity is also associated with economic inefficiency. Hence, improving the efficiency of use of resources in an economy can often be achieved at low or negative cost, thereby providing economic gains. Most importantly, using resources efficiently also makes it possible for the poor to gain access to them, which otherwise they may not be able to afford.

According to numerous studies, India—like many other nations—is staring at an impending scarcity in the wake of increasing and unplanned consumption of non-renewable resources. A TERI study had indicated that the total commercial energy consumption in India would increase by 7.5 times between 2001 and 2031, under a business as usual scenario. In addition, imports of coal, oil and gas are also expected to increase manifold in the next couple of decades.

To overcome this stark situation, the need of the hour is to identify and address the systemic roadblocks to sustainable development. Undoubtedly, framing strong policies and ensuring their effective implementation will require unprecedented levels of cooperation between international governments. Through the DSDS series, TERI aims to herald this much-needed change by enabling nations, scientists, experts and policymakers to join hands in saving the planet.

EFT Bureau, Bangalore: Indian Defense Minister Mr. AK Antony would inaugurate the Ninth Edition of Aero India on February 6, 2013 at Air Force Station Yelahanka in Bangalore.

Organized by Department of Defense Production this biennial event provides a significant platform for Indian and Foreign vendors. While Aero India 2011 saw the participation of exhibitors from 29 countries with more than 675 companies and 47 overseas delegations accommodated over the gross exhibition area of 75,000 Sqm, the Ninth Edition of this International Aerospace Exhibition is expected to see the participation of over 600 companies and 78 overseas delegations accommodated over an approximate area of 1,25,000 Sqm. The largest overseas participation is seen from USA with indoor space occupied being 1,185 sqm followed by Israel and Russia. Other major participants are France, UK, Germany and Belgium, Bulgaria, Italy, Ukraine, Australia, Belarus, Czech Republic, Japan, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Netherlands, Romania, Sweden, UAE and Singapore.

The event would also see the participation of aerobatic teams—Flying Bulls from Czech Republic, Russian Knights-Russian Air Force Aerobatic Team and IAF’s Sarang Aerobatic Team.

The first edition of Aero India was held in December 1996 with an objective to provide significant platform for business opportunities in the International Aviation sector as well as to exhibit capabilities of Indian Defenses R&D and Production. Being a biennial event subsequent editions were held in 1998, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2011. While a modest 176 companies participating in the second edition of Aero India in 1996, the event in its Ninth Edition of 2013 is expected to feature over 600 companies.

More than 78 official delegations are expected to attend the four day exhibition with many products expected to be launched by Indian and Foreign Companies during the exhibitions. Several Business to Business meetings are planned to be held on the sidelines. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) is the Event Manager of Aero India 2013.

Indian Golf League Auction: Campbell Tops With $61,000

EFT Report, Mumbai: Former US Open champion Michael Campbell was the hottest property in an auction for the inaugural Golf Premier League near Mumbai next month as eight franchises spent nearly $700,000 to recruit players.

The New Zealander was bought for $61,000 by Shubhkamna Eagles at the auction, while two-times major winner Angel Cabrera went to Maharashtra 59ers and 2011 Open winner Darren Clarke was picked by Uttarakhand Lions, both for $55,000.

Scheduled to take place from February 8–10, 2013 at a course near Mumbai, the league with total prize money of $400,000, will feature two day-night rounds of strokeplay, followed by a final round of the best-ball format.

Touted in India as golf's answer to Twenty20 cricket, each round will be played over 14 holes instead of the regular 18.

"For me it is the slow and steady build-up to the dream that I have had for a franchise-based event in golf and now we are up and running," Indian golfer Shiv Kapur, who masterminded the league, said in a statement.

"The launch and the auction have set the stage and now it is for us, the players, to add to the show."

The franchises bought three players each, with Kapoor drawing the highest fee among the Indian golfers, joining Cabrera at Maharashtra 59ers for $59,000.

Gaganjeet Bhullar, a four-times winner on the Asian Tour, fetched $58,000 from Punjab Lancers, who have also secured the services of Asia number one Thaworn Wiratchant.

EFT Report, Aligarh: Congress president Sonia Gandhi will deliver the convocation address at the Aligarh Muslim University on Feb. 16, 2013 becoming the second woman to do so -- 87 years after the first.

The announcement was made after a meeting, presided over by AMU Vice Chancellor Lt. Gen. (retd.) Zameeruddin Shah to discuss various issues for the annual convocation.

The first woman to deliver the convocation address of the university was its first chancellor, Nawab Sultan Jahan Begum of Bhopal, on Jan. 26, 1925.

The 18-year-old singer was wearing a black tank top, a baseball hat and aviator sunglasses, and was peering over his shoulder in the image. He deleted the image shortly after it was posted to his official account, though it had already been liked more than 15,000 times and received more than 2,700 comments.

Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, joked about the picture via Twitter. "As a prankster you have to respect another good prank," he wrote. "Only makes sense. #crackdealer." Bieber's succinct reply: "Haha."

Design Temple: ‘Sense and Sensuality’ at Nature From Jan. 18–Feb. 24

Report by Santanu Ganguly, Gurgaon: Founded in 1999 by Divya Thakur, Design Temple is a major force in contemporary design in India today, focusing on home accessories but also branching out into graphic art, publication design, fashion, interiors and artistic collaborations. Their products are characterized by a clever wit, a social consciousness, a heightened awareness of symbology, and impeccable craftsmanship.

For Nature Morte's gallery space at the Oberoi Gurgaon, Design Temple has focused on a group of products that reinterprets the traditional yet syncretic beliefs, practices and attitudes that revolve around gender, sexuality and spirituality in India. "Sense and Sensuality" builds a visual narrative by using design objects that inform our contemporary way of life.

Design Temple: ‘Sense and Sensuality’ at Nature

The foundation is laid with a group of wool pile carpets from the "Floored!" series, replicating geometric patterns found in domestic and sacred architectural spaces. Arranged with these are the puzzle-like constructions entitled "Indian Order." This modular system, inspired by pillars found in temples and mosques, allows for multiple functions through limitless combinations. Here, they will be further activated by the addition of Design Temple's "Lingam Candles." Completing the display will be selections of limited edition prints from two collections ("Erogenius" and "Animania") as well as the "Peacock Mirror," a tribute to Narcissism.

In 2011, Design Temple was invited to participate in Wallpaper Magazine's exhibition Handmade* at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. In 2007, Divya Thakur was commissioned by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London to curate a graphic representation of contemporary India. Ms. Thakur has also showcased the unorganized design sector with an exhibition entitled Indigenous India in 2004 at the Loggia dei Mercanti in Milan. Design Temple products can be found in their dedicated retail outlet in the Colaba neighborhood of Mumbai as well as lifestyle boutiques across India.
