Report by Santanu Ganguly, New Delhi: For his second solo exhibition at the gallery entitled "Cut Corner," Brazilian-born artist Vijai Patchineelam (born Niteri, 1983) extends his practice to explore notions of displacement as a form of generating and further developing content between site-specific practices and the medium of video. Displacement refers here to a situation where an intrusive medium runs within another artistic practice, not in an attempt to radically overturn it, but as an active process of questioning the given assumptions from the host practice.
For the exhibition Patchineelam will show new photographs, a set of photo-novels in the form of artist books, a silent video and a diptych composed of one photograph and one video. Taken altogether, Patchineelam probes the various strata within which various media operate and how to displace the artistic practice of the site-specific work€"which deals with space and matter€"to the medium of the moving image, introducing yet new layers to his highly-refined conceptual practice.
