The 2012-13 UEFA Champions League began with bang with Spanish champions Real Madrid scoring twice late to beat English champions Manchester City 3-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu in their Group D opening match on Sept 19, 2012.
The match can be put in plain simple word….here goes….City scores and lead..Madrid equalizes …City scores and lead again..Madrid equalizes again….Ronaldo scores and Madrid wins. The goal feast started in the second half after a great run from Yaya Toure found substitute Edin Dzeko, who slotted it home passed Iker Casilla. Marcelo equalized for the home team in the 76th minute. Citizens’ lead again in the 85th minute with a superb Kolarov's free kick that drifted untouched into the bottom corner Madrid’s goal but Benzema pulled Madrid back with a sublime turn and finish. In the 90th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo ensured Los Blancos’ the full three points with a dipping shot past both Vincent Kompany and City’s keeper Joe Hart.
In another Group D match played, Germany’s Borussia Dortmund beat Dutch side Ajax 1-0 at Signal-Iduna-Park- Dortmund. Poland international Robert Lewandowski scored for the Bundesliga champions.
