Thomas Vermaelen Named New Arsenal FC Captain After RvP’s Exit

Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen has been named new Arsenal FC skipper after the departure of Robin van Persie to Manchester United. The 26-year-old has been a mainstay of Arsène Wenger’s defence since moving to The Emirates in 2009 from Dutch side Ajax FC. Midfielder Mikel Arteta is the new vice-captain.

While Vermaelen’s leadership has never been questioned, the defender has suffered from persistent injury problems and was sideline for most of last season.

Meanwhile, Jack Wilshere will wear the Arsenal’s new No 10 after being vacated by Robin van Persie. The England midfielder, who has been on the sidelines for over 12 months, is expected to return in October.

The 21st season of the English Premier League kicks off on August 18, 2012.
