Chettri Named Indian Hockey Captain for London Olympics

Goalkeeper Bharat Chettri will lead the 18-member Indian hockey team for the four-nation Olympic test event in London from May 2–6, 2012.

Selection trials were conducted at Sports Authority of India (SAI) Center in Bangalore from April 8–9, by Hockey India (HI) selectors BP Govinda and Balbir Singh alongwith government observer Harbinder Singh.

Besides hosts Britain and India, Australia and Germany are the other participating teams.

The tournament will give India an opportunity to play against higher ranked teams who have also qualified for the Olympic Games.

The tournament will be played on the blue artificial turf with yellow balls. The pitch has pink runaways.

Indian Hockey squad:

Goalkeepers: Bharat Chetri (captain), Sreejesh PR

Defenders: Sandeep Singh, VR Raghunath, Ignace Tirkey

Midfielders: Birendra Lakra, Sardar Singh (vice-captain), Manpreet Singh, Gurbaj Singh, Kothajit Singh

Forwards: SV Sunil, Sarvanjit Singh, Gurwinder Singh Chandi, Shivendra Singh, Danish Mujtaba, SK Uthappa, Tushar Khandker, Chinglensana Singh

Standbys: Rupinderpal Singh (defender), Pradeep Mor (midfielder), Dharamvir Singh, Pradhan Somanna (both forward)
