Champions League: Heartbreak at Bernabéu as Bayern Beat Madrid in Penalties to Enter Final

Bayern Munich beat Real Madrid 3-1 in penalties at Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid, Spain on April 25 and booked a spot against Chelsea for the Champions League final to be played at its home ground at Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany on May 19, 2012.

The second leg at Bernabeu finished at 2-1 to Real Madrid (3-3 on aggregate) after normal time and was decided by penalties. Ronaldo scored a brace early in the match to put Los Blancos’ on course only to see Arjen Robben canceled out the advantage from the spot-kick after German striker Mario Gomez was brought down by Pepe in the 27 minute. The match ended 2-1 (3-3 on agg) after extra time with both teams missing crucial chances and taking the tie into penalties.

Ronaldo, Kaka penalties were well saved by Bayern keeper Neuer. Iker Casillas momentarily brought Madrid back into the match by saving Philipp Lahm and Kroos penalties but after Ramos failed to draw level from 12 yards, all Schweinsteiger had to do was to find the net which he eventually did and sent Bayern into the Final.

Now the spotlight shift to Allianz Arena, where the 4-time champion Bayern can now become the first team to win the Champions League at their home ground. A cracker of a game awaits.
