Yaoshang Festival Begins in Manipur

The five-day long Yaoshang festival started in Imphal, Manipur. People burnt small huts built with bamboo and straw and children went around for Nakatheng (seeking money).

The people of all ages came out and took part in Yaoshang sports and cultural events. The festival centers on sporting and cultural activities. With the advent of Hindu religion in Manipur in the 18th century, the festival got a little Hindu look as colors are used but now sporting culture has completely are galore everywhere.

At night young boys and girls celebrate Thabal Chongba (dancing in the moon light). Grown ups have already started offering classical Manipuri music at Shri Shri Govindajee temple.

All educational institutes, business establishments, newspaper house, oil depots remain closed down during the festival.
