Tamil Nadu Celebrates ‘Ugadi’ New Year

Andhraites and Kannadigas in Tamil Nadu celebrated the Telugu and Kannada New Year Ugadi with traditional fervor on Friday, March 23, 2012.

People went to temples for the auspicious day in the morning after taking the traditional head bath. The day starts early with everyone in the family taking head bath. The house is decorated with kolam (rangoli) outside the front door. Mango leaf streamers adorn the doors. Gold ornaments are placed before the deity.

"The main dish for today is the Ugadi Pacchidi. It is made with neem flowers, jaggery, mango, green chilli, salt and tamarind juice. The idea is to reflect the six different emotions that humans experience," Mahalakshmi Ram, a human resource trainer said.
