Indian Govt Rolls Back Rail Fares

India’s newly appointed Railway Minister Mukul Roy has partially rolled back increases in rail fares except for the AC1 and AC2 classes.

The railway minister in the Rajya Sabha announced rollback of passenger fare hike in sleeper, sub-urban, AC chair car and AC 3-tier. Roy also put on hold proposal for expansion of Railway Board.

Former railway minister Dinesh Trivedi had announced a minimum fare hike across the board in his Railway Budget earlier this month but had to quit as Trinamool Chief Mamata Banerjee disapproved of the fare hike.

Mamata pressured the central government to replace Trivedi with her trusted man Mukul Roy as railway minister.
