Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa launched the distribution of sarees and dhotis for the poor under the free dhotis and sarees scheme being implemented by the state government coinciding with the traditional harvest festival of Pongal.
She has announced the allocation of Rs 350 crore for the scheme to procure sarees and dhotis from the weavers for distribution to the poor.
Under the scheme, this year, 1.70 crore sarees and 1.69 crore dhotis would be distributed free of cost to the poor on the occasion of Pongal.
