Report by Santanu Ganguly, Noida: The students of The Millennium School, Noida, celebrated National Girl Child Day on Jan. 24, 2013. To mark the occasion, a special assembly was organised within the school premises which talked about the right to equality for women in every sphere of life.
National Girl Child Day is celebrated in India every year on January 24, since 2009. The objective behind the celebration of the day is to raise the consciousness of the society towards the girl child so that she can be valued and respected. Celebration at TMS Noida underscores the need for schools to create gender sensitivity at a formative stage among children.
A special assembly was organised which talked about the rights of women/girls. Mr. S.M. Khan, Director General, Doordarshan News was the Chief Guest on the occasion. The assembly talked about how female is integral to the very creation of the world and the major powers revolve around her like Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Kali. Highlight of the assembly was a play titled ‘Respect Karo, Result Dekho’. It was enacted by the students and talked about providing equal rights to females. The play highlighted the stark bias in society about the girl child and underlined the crucial responsibility of everyone to address the issue.
The sex ratio in India is shockingly skewed with 914 females per 1000 males as per the census conducted in 2011. This figure has worsened from 927 females per 1000 males in 2001. Various social biases towards the girl child have been identified as prominent causes of the skew. As per a report by UNPF (United Nations Population Fund) five to seven lakh girls lose their lives as a result of the prenatal sex selection even though it is banned in India since 1994.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Rita Kaul, Principal, The Millennium School, Noida, said, “Our country has a very poor sex ratio. It is in this context that the effort of organizing this programme on the occasion of the National Girl Child day has been made. Our mission is not only to not only sensitize our students about the subject but to use them as ambassadors to influence others around them. The idea is to shake the mindset which prefers a male child over a female child. Whenever a baby comes into this world, it calls for celebration irrespective of the gender.”
