India rang in Diwali with firecrackers and a visual treat of diyas (earthen lamps) on Nov. 13, 2012.
People across India woke up early, wore new clothes and performed prayers at home to mark the festival of lights. This was followed by another round of cracker explosions.
Neighbors, relatives and friends exchanged Diwali greetings. At most homes, telephones started ringing from 8 am as people exchanged Diwali greetings.
Diwali is celebrated on Amavasya (no moon day) and is marked by lighting of lamps and diyas (earthen lamps) in the evening. It is the day to offer special prayers to Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth.
The festival of lights marks the triumph of good over evil, and is widely believed to mark the return of Hindu god Ram to Ayodhya after vanquishing the demon king Ravana.
