Nobel Laureate Niels Bohr's 127th Birthday Celebrated by Google

Google is celebrating the 127th birth anniversary of the Danish Nobel Laureate Niels Bohr through its Google Doodle on Oct. 7, 2012.

Niels Henrik David Bohr was born on October 7, 1885 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He made foundational contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum mechanics, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922. “If quantum mechanics hasn't profoundly shocked you, you haven't understood it yet.” he said once.

Niels Bohr was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics "for his services in the investigation of the structure of atoms and of the radiation emanating from them" in 1922. He in later years moved to the USA and participated in the Manhattan Project, known as the then-secret atomic bomb project. He advocated peaceful use of nuclear energy.

He has been described as one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century. He was awarded the Order of the Elephant by the Danish government. He died in Copenhagen in 1962 of heart failure.
