Kolkata: Presidency University to Hold Election in September

Two years after being upgraded from a college, the Presidency University in Kolkata will hold student elections for the first time in September, 2012.

Vice-chancellor Malabika Sarkar said the modalities for the election had been worked out after discussions with students and on the basis of the JM Lyngdoh Commission recommendations.

The students have welcomed the announcement.

Originally called Hindu College, it was renamed Presidency College in 1855 and was upgraded to a university in 2010.

The college's alumni include Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Satyajit Ray, Jyoti Basu and scientist Satyendranath Bose.

India's first president, Rajendra Prasad, and former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee have also studied in the college.
