JNU Students Union Polls on March 1

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) in Delhi is all set to go to polls on Thursday, March 1, 2012 after a gap of four years. Four office-bearers and 31 others will be elected in balloting scheduled for March 1.

The Supreme Court suspended the JNU Students Union elections in 2008, citing violations of the Lyngdoh Committee's recommendations on students' union polls in educational institutions.

However, on December 8, 2011, the apex court revoked the stay as an interim measure and gave certain exemptions, for instance raising the upper age limit to 30 years, waiving the requirement of 75 percent attendance for a candidate to contest elections, and allowing the use of photocopies of pamphlets in poll campaign.
