The Artist, Hugo Win Five Oscars Each

Silent film 'The Artist' has won five Oscars on Feb. 26, 2012 in Los Angeles at the 84th Academy Awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Score and Best Costume Design. Dujardin is the first actor of French nationality to win an Oscar.

Martin Scorsese's Hugo swept the best of the awards in the technical category — Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects. Hugo had a record 11 nominations this year.

Meryl Streep won the Best Actress award for her role as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady.' It was Streep's third Academy Award out of 17 nominations.

Actress Octavia Spencer won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her work in The Help. Best Supporting Actor was won by Christopher Plummer for Beginners. Plummer is now the oldest recipient of an Oscar for acting at 82. Jessica Tandy was 80 when she won it for Driving Miss Daisy.

Iranian director Asghar Farhadi accepted the Best Foreign Language film for his drama, A Separation. Pakistani documentary, Saving Face, won the nation its first Oscar for Best Documentary Short.
