Nationwide Strike in India on Feb. 28

Trade and bank unions have called for a nationwide strike across India on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012 to protest rising prices, disinvestment of profit-making PSUs, violation of labor laws and other issues.

More than 8 lakh bank employees will go on nationwide strike to protest against reforms and outsourcing of jobs. The strike will be backed by 11 central trade unions and 5,000 smaller unions.

The strike will be felt in Assam, Manipur, Kerala, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Bihar, according to senior union leaders. Except railways, almost all sectors are likely to come to a halt on Tuesday.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banaerjee and the Congress party have decided to oppose the general strike.
