Polling Begins for Fifth Phase UP Election

Polling for the fifth phase of Uttar Pradesh's staggered elections in 49 assembly seats spread across 13 districts began on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 at 7 am.

The total electorate numbering 1,56,54,936 (men 8653345, women 7001279 and others 312) will seal the fate of 829 candidates, including 87 women candidates, in the fray.

The political parties contesting in this phase are Bahujan Samaj Party, Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress, Nationalist Congress Party, Samajwadi Party and others.

The number of EVMs being used in this phase is 48,015, while the total number of polling stations is 17,267.

The assembly constituency with maximum number of candidates is Govindnagar with 34 in the fray while Rasulabad with seven is the constituency with minimum number of candidates.

Votes will be counted on March 6, after the two remaining phases scheduled on Feb. 28 and March 3.
