The Kolkata Auction Centre will commence electronic auction of Darjeeling tea, known the world over for its aroma and taste, from the next financial year. The Darjeeling crop is likely to enter the e-auction mode by April 2012.
The Kolkata Auction Centre is the oldest surviving centre in the world. It is the largest auction centre in India. Electronic auction of tea was introduced in Kolkata in 2009 for all varieties of tea except Darjeeling teas, which are still sold in the manual outcry method.
