India Celebrates First Day of Eid-al-Adha Today

India celebrates the first day of Eid-al-Adha, the Muslim festival of sacrifice on Monday, Nov. 7, 2011. Eid, also known as the “Festival of the Sacrifice,” is one of the most important Muslim holidays and is marked by extensive pre-festive shopping.

The festival marks the day Muslims believe Abraham showed willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael to God as an act of devotion. God, who ordered the sacrifice, then spared Ishmael. On Eid, Muslims world-wide pay tribute to Abraham with the ceremonial slaughtering of an animal, usually a goat or a lamb. Part of butchered animal is donated to feed the poor.

Eid falls on the last day of the Hajj, the ritual pilgrimage to Mecca, in accordance to the Islamic lunar calendar.

Eid is a public holiday in India. Government offices, businesses and schools in India are closed.
