Molodist Intl Film Festival Kicks off in Ukraine

The 41st edition of the international film festival Molodist is set to kick off in Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine.

More than 200 movies are to be screened at the festival, which runs from Oct. 22-30.

Among the highlights of the feature competition program are the French/German/Polish/Ukrainian co-production Land of Oblivion (La terre outragee), directed by Michale Boganim, A Family of Three (Tage die bleiben ) by German director Pia Strietmann, Facing Mirrors (Ayneh-ha-ye rouberou) by Iran’s Negar Azarbayjani, Suicide Room (Sala samobojcow) by Polish director Jan Komasa and the Swiss film The Little Room (La petite chambre ), directed by Stephanie Chuat and Veronique Reymond.

The festival is to feature several retrospectives, including that of works by Maya Deren, who was born in Kiev and later immigrated with her family to the United States where she became known as an independent experimental film director.

The international jury of this year’s competition is headed by Ukrainian writer Oksana Zabuzhko. The winners of the festival’s prizes, including the Grand Prix, the Scythian Deer, which comes with a $10,000 cash prize, are to be announced at the closing ceremony on Oct. 30.
