Bihar's Biggest Festival 'Chhath' Begins

Bihar’s biggest festival ‘Chhath’ began on Oct. 30 as millions of devotees, mainly married women, thronged the river banks to take bath before preparing traditional food.

The four day Chhath festival—celebrated five days after Diwali—is dedicated to the Sun God.

Married women fast for 36 hours during the course of the festival. Devotees traditionally offer wheat, milk, sugar cane, bananas and coconuts to the sun.

In Patna and other towns in Bihar, all roads leading to river banks are decorated and cleaned for the devotees to perform 'arghya' or oblations to the sun.

The festival will conclude on Nov. 2, 2011.
