Bush begins Mid-East tour, arrives in Israel

US President George W Bush starts his first presidential trip to Israel seeking to build momentum for stalled Mideast peace talks and clear up confusion about whether the United States is serious about confronting Iran about its suspected nuclear ambitions. Bush arrives in Israel on a visit to advance peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians.

Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert were waiting to greet him. A red carpet was rolled up to the steps of Bush's plane, and military band and honour guard stood on the tarmac. 'Nice to be here,' says Bush to a dignitary as he shook hands along the red carpet.

Israeli PM and Palestinian leader vowed at a US summit last year to try to achieve a two-state solution by 2008. His visit was not welcomed by Hamas, the militant group.
