Aligarh Muslim University Celebrates 'Sir Syed Day'

The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) celebrated the 195th birth anniversary of its founder, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012.

In the morning, a Quran-reading session ('Quran Khwani') was held at the university mosque after the Fajr (dawn) prayer and floral tributes were paid at the 'mazar' of Sir Syed.

Later, university Vice-Chancellor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah inaugurated an exhibition of books and photographs of Sir Syed at the Sir Syed Academy. He also inaugurated a grand book fair on the lawns of Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology.

An exhibition of books and photographs on Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and Papa Mian Sheikh Abdullah, the doyen of female education in India, was inaugurated by Milena Santana Ramirez, Venezuelan Ambassador to India at the Women's College Library.

There was also a grand commemorative function held at the Athletics Ground. The chief guest was former union minister and Rajya Sabha member Mohsina Kidwai.
