India Celebrates 65 Years of Independence; Maoists Hoist Black Flags

On Wednesday, Aug. 15, India celebrates the 65 years of its independence from the British rule in 1947.

Independence Day celebrations begin after Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hoists the tricolor and delivers an address to the nation from the iconic Red Fort. This is followed by a grand military parade in the heart of New Delhi. The event is attended by members of the Indian armed forces, politicians and foreign diplomats.

Government and private offices, stock markets, schools and colleges are closed for the day.

Maoists hoisted black flags in eight districts of Bihar on Aug. 15, 2012 to protest India's Independence Day. Several insurgent groups in the North East India have called for the boycott of the Independence Day functions.
