Beijing to Build World's Busiest Airport

The capital city of China, Beijing will begin construction of an airport this year that will become the world's busiest. The yet-to-be-named airport will replace the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta in the US as the busiest airport.

The cost of building the airport will be around 30 billion yuan (around $5 billion).

With nine runways, the new airport will handle more than 130 million passengers and 5.5 million tons of cargo annually. It will cover an area of around 27 square km.

Located in Daxing, 46 km south of Tiananmen Square, construction is due to be completed in October 2017.

Beijing currently has two airports — the Beijing Nanyuan Airport and the Beijing Capital International Airport.
