Punjabi University Gets Weather Radar System

Punjabi University became the advanced centre of weather forecasting with the inauguration of Doppler Weather Radar on its campus.

Installed by India Meteorological Department, under Ministry of Earth Sciences, the new system will generate data which will be useful to study and forecast flash floods, river catchment inflows, thunder storms and rainfall occurrence.

It will also generate weather products useful for aviation industry, helping in the operation of airfields, issue of aerodrome warnings and route forecast for flights operating in the region.

It is 12th centre in the country and the Indian government is planning to increase the number to 55 in due course to cover every nook and corner of the country.

The Doppler Weather Radar provides information on the velocity and special width in addition to reflectivity alone as is done by the conventional radar system.
