555 Artists Perform Odissi to Create World Record

A total of 555 artists from 20 countries performed classical Odissi dance on one stage in Odisha's capital Bhubaneswar on Friday, Dec. 23, 2011 with an aim to enter their names in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Noted Odissi exponent Aruna Mohanty and dance critic Meera Venkatraman were present on behalf of the Guinness Book of World Records as jury members.

Thousands of spectators were left spell-bound when the dancers, clad in traditional costumes, gave their performance at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar at 3.30 pm. The dance lasted for about 30 minutes.

Last year, around 2,800 dancers created a world record when they performed the century-old Kuchipudi dance form at Gacchibowli Stadium in Hyderabad.
