Homelands Exhibitions Open in Delhi; Also to Travel Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru

Report by Santanu Ganguly, New Delhi: One of the year’s most anticipated exhibitions, Homelands will travel to four cities (New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bengaluru) across India in 2013.

The exhibition will open to the public in New Delhi on January 24, 2013 at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), in Kolkata on March 1 at The Harrington Street Arts Centre, in Mumbai on April 28 at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum and in Bengaluru in the last week of June.

Cutting to the heart of 21st century cultural relations, Homelands grapples with the relationship between self and place in a world of transitory identities and contested geographies. Culled from the art collection of the British Council, the exhibition is a unique take on contemporary British art by the Indian curator, Latika Gupta. Including more than 80 works by 28 leading modern and contemporary artists, Homelands excavates the idea of a ‘homeland’ to reveal a rich plurality of meaning; ideas of belonging, alienation, history and memory.

Homelands will roll out a multi-layered program that includes public exhibitions in four major metros (New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru), artist talks, seminars, curator-led walks, outreach activities and workshops.

Homelands is supported by an innovative network of public-private partnerships developed by the British Council, and epitomizes a new and exciting funding model for public art in India. Key partners helping to bring the pan-Indian exhibition together include Jaguar, Christie’s and Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited. The outreach program, additionally supported by Outset India, is also focused on developing and cultivating unique, local partnerships and encouraging dialogue and collaboration between Indian and UK institutions.

A private preview of Homelands was held at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) on January 22, 2013. The preview was well attended by art enthusiasts, collectors, artists, gallerists, curators and a number of fashion and business personalities which included names likes Robin Mallick, Mithu Sen, Rajshree Pathy, Anupam Poddar, Girish Shahane, Amol Vadehra, M.K Raina, Feroz Gujral, Mukesh Panika, David Abraham, Kamlesh Rao, T.N. Ninan, Pushkar Shahi, Kamal Chabbra to name a few.

A post preview reception was also held at the British Council Charbagh on January 22. The Homelands post preview reception was well attended by art enthusiasts, collectors, artists, curators, critics, and people from the fashion fraternity which included names like Vishal K Dar, Jeebesh Bagchi, Shuddhabrata Sengupta, Vibha Galhotra, Nida Mahmood, Rahul Chandra, Simon Maidment, Pooja Sood, Rohit Gandhi, Atul Bhalla, Shivan and Naresh, Ram Rahman, Surbhi Modi, Dadi Pudumjee amongst others. The night included music by Wild City DJ and a surprise dance performance by Danceworx.

Works by 28 of the world’s leading contemporary artists from the British Council Collection will be showcased at the exhibition.

Angus Boulton | Fabien Cappello | Lisa Cheung | Nathan Coley | Jeremy Deller | Suki Dhanda | Jimmie Durham | Paul Graham | Graham Gussin | Mona Hatoum | Anthony Haughey | Tim Hetherington | Susan Hiller | David Hockney | Anthony Lam | Langlands & Bell | Richard Long | Rachel Lowe | Haroon Mirza | Raymond Moore | Cornelia Parker | Martin Parr | Grayson Perry | Zineb Sedira | George Shaw | David Shrigley | Bob and Roberta Smith | Gillian Wearing.

From this esteemed group of contemporary artists, there are 8 Turner Prize winners and nominees namely Jeremy Deller (winner, 2004), Richard Long (winner, 1989), Grayson Perry (winner, 2003), Gillian Wearing (winner, 1997), Mona Hatoum (nominee, 1995), Langlands & Bell (nominee, 2004), George Shaw (nominee, 2011) and Cornelia Parker (nominee, 1997). Tim Hetherington was the winner of World Press Photo in 2007.

Four of the showcased artists are being invited to visit the exhibition in India, including Mona Hatoum, Anthony Haughey, Zineb Sedira and Suki Dhanda. During their stay, the artists will engage with audiences, give public talks and conduct workshops.

“The Homelands exhibition will showcase the very best art being produced by leading contemporary artists in Britain – a fitting juxtaposition to our international sales of works by their South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art contemporaries. The exhibition is an opportunity for us to lend our support to cultural and educational opportunities which are important milestones in the Indian cultural agenda for 2013”, said Menaka Kumari-Shah, Christie’s Head of India.

“Jaguar cars are renowned the world over for their contemporary designs and stunning great looks and I believe that art can have the same impact on people's lives. The Homelands exhibition will provide the Indian art connoisseurs with an opportunity to access great work from globally recognised artists, and we are delighted to support that” - said Rohit Suri, VP, Jaguar Land Rover India.

Feroze Gujral of Director, Outset India said, “Outset India was set up to provide a platform for contemporary art in India. By supporting the extensive Homelands outreach programme - which includes workshops, public talks, and education initiatives – we will be able to offer much needed support to both artists and arts organisations across the country, during this truly exciting time for contemporary art in India.”.

“Today, many of us move across national boundaries. We are born in one country, we make another our home. In the criss-crossing of political, social and cultural borders, we live our lives through hyphenated identities: belonging here and there; inhabiting multiple places - both physical and metaphorical. Geographies that can be mapped as inter/national boundaries and as places conjured up by through remembering and imagining. What constitutes a homeland? Is it ethnicity? Language? Religion? Customs and beliefs? Are homelands those in which our ancestors were born? What of outsiders who live and make other lands their homes? Where do we really belong? Where is it that we hope to one day return?” said Latika Gupta, Curator.

Rob Lynes, Director, British Council India, said “Homelands is the British Council’s flagship arts project of 2013. It’s exciting because it introduces work by 28 brilliant British artists to India; because it will reach tens of thousands of people, especially young people, with the best contemporary art; and because it demonstrates the value of international collaboration, with an Indian curator Latika Gupta offering a unique slant on a British art collection. But most of all, it’s exciting because it asks such fundamental questions about a world that’s changing in front of our eyes, about the sometimes bewildering identity crisis that, for so many of us, constitutes modern life. Homelands demonstrates that art can help us learn about the world around us: but also, that it can help us learn about ourselves.”

Škoda Prize Show Opens at National Gallery of Modern Art
Škoda Prize Show at National Gallery of Modern Art

The Škoda Prize Show will present a selection of works, curated by Girish Shahane (Director of Art –the Škoda Prize) from the Škoda Prize 2012 Top 20 finalists, showcasing some of the most exciting, and groundbreaking solo exhibitions by mid-career artists (under the age of 45) presented in India in the year 2012. Now in its third year, The Škoda Prize for Indian Contemporary Art, has earned a place as one of the most influential platforms for Indian contemporary art, recognising contemporary art practices that demonstrate a highly innovative use of form and material, as well as a mature engagement with contemporary culture.

The Škoda Prize Show is a rare occasion for audiences in India to experience some of the most impactful and cutting edge art practices that have been showcased in private and public arts institutions across the country over the past year. The annual exhibition has seen footfalls in the thousands over the past three years. The inclusion of the Škoda Prize Show in the prestigious programme of the National Gallery of Modern Art marks a high point in Delhi’s vibrant cultural calendar this winter, drawing the nation’s attention, and the global art community, to some of the most significant developments in contemporary art in India today.

“I believe that The Škoda Prize truly presents and supports the art of the “New Generation”. These are essentially artists who have emerged in the 1990s in India presenting their own practice by portraying the reality that they have experienced and depicting strongly their concerns as individuals. Art can no longer be compartmentalized into painting, sculpture, print making etc. Art is now breaking all previously laid out barriers and has diversified into a multitude of media such as installation art, video art, performance art, conceptual art and the new buzz of media art. These too have evolved and developed over a period of time. The artists have chosen to break away from the mould of the existing art practices and have given birth to new approaches and genres in art previously not experienced and contrary to the popular belief contributing greatly to the value and the unconventional mode. I am truly delighted that the National Gallery of Modern Art. New Delhi, Ministry of Culture, Government of India is presenting the Škoda Prize Show. I am equally pleased that The Škoda Prize has established itself as a prestigious award for visual arts and it has evolved as a much awaited contemporary art exhibition in India.” - Prof. Rajeev Lochan (Director of the NGMA, New Delhi)

A winner will be selected from the Top 4 finalists in the running for the Škoda Prize 2012 (announced in November 2012), and will receive a cash prize of INR 10,00,000. Selections for the prize are submitted by an esteemed jury including art historian, Geeta Kapur, Director of the Devi Art Foundation, Anupam Poddar, artist Sheela Gowda and Swiss curator Mirjam Viradinis. The chief guest will be William Kentridge, South African artist of international acclaim. William Kentridge will present the trophy to this year’s winner and will join as the 5th member of the jury who will decide the winner of the Škoda Prize 2012.

The winner of the Art India Breakthrough Artist Award (launched last year in order to create a platform for emerging artists as part of the Škoda Prize initiative) will be announced on the same day. The shortlisted artists for this year Prabhakar Pachpute, Ratna Khanna, Rohini Devasher and Yardena Kurulkar are eligible for the prize.

The ŠKODA Prize is the most prestigious award on the Indian visual arts scene. It recognises cutting-edge work demonstrating vision, innovation, and a mature understanding of material and form. 13th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit 2013 From Jan. 31–Feb. 2

Report by Santanu Ganguly, New Delhi: Featuring an illustrious array of distinguished Heads of State, Nobel Laureates, Policymakers and Corporate leaders, The Energy and Resources Institute’s (TERI) 13th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh.

The 13th edition of The Energy and Resources Institute’s (TERI) widely popular Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS) is all set to witness focused discussions among global leaders on resource-efficient growth, climate change and protection of natural resources. The three-day Summit, which will be held at Hotel Taj Palace in New Delhi from January 31-February 02, 2013, is themed “The Global Challenge of Resource-Efficient Growth and Development”--one of the most pressing challenges faced by the world today.
13th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit 2013
13th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit 2013

In a significant gesture, the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, will be officially raising the curtain on the DSDS this year. Pushing the agenda for sustainable growth, the Summit aims to provide an efficient platform for thought leaders and policymakers to discuss effective policy mechanisms to reduce energy and resource footprint. The Summit seeks to not only build a global consensus to protect natural resources, but also to explore innovative solutions to boost efficient practices and minimize unsustainable consumption patterns.

Highlighting the Summit’s role in framing the global agenda on sustainable development, Dr. R K Pachauri, Director-General, TERI, India, said, “Sustainable Development as a concept was popularized by the Brundtland Commission, but hardly received attention from influential world leaders till very recently. DSDS was launched in 2001 with foresight on the crucial importance of converting this concept into worldwide practice. Over the years with the involvement of world leaders from every section of human endeavor, sustainable development has moved from a concept to policies and programs in different parts of the globe. DSDS has been an important instrument in bringing about this change.

The 13th edition of the widely popular Summit will feature a dazzling array of distinguished luminaries, including Mr Donald Ramotar, President, Government of Guyana; Mr James Alix Michel, President, Seychelles; Mr Anote Tong, President, Republic of Kiribati; Ms Tarja Halonen, Former President, Finland; Mr Haruhiko Kuroda, President, Asian Development Bank; Mr Donald Kaberuka, President, African Development Bank; Mr Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, President, sixty-sixth session of the UN General Assembly; The Rt. Hon. The Lord John Prescott, House of Lords, UK; Nobel Laureate Carlo Rubbia, Scientific Director, Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, Germany; Prof. Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director, The Earth Institute, Columbia University, USA and Mr Thomas L Friedman, Foreign Affairs Columnist, The New York Times, USA.

The eminent guests will engage in highly interactive and informative discussions on myriad themes such as Adapting to the Impacts of Climate Change; Mitigating Emissions of Greenhouse Gases and Associated Co-benefits; Employment and Growth Potential of a Green Economy; Choices before the BRICS and a New Economic Construct; Sustainable Development and the New Knowledge Economy; and Defining the Future We Want.

A central novelty at DSDS this year will be the thematic tracks, which will allow for detailed discussions on niche topics. Global Trends in Sustainable Production And Consumption with a special focus on edible oils; Mindset of Green Growth; Post-2015 Development Agenda and the Energy Future We Want for All; Reducing Inequalities: a Sustainable Development Challenge and Low carbon sustainable mobility for all will be some of the key areas on which parallel discussions will take place on the sidelines of the Summit.

In addition, the tenth World CEO Sustainability Summit (WCSS)—themed ‘Resource Revolution: A Global Imperative and How Business Can Shape It’--will witness an impressive congregation of corporate leaders exchanging views on the role of business in protecting resources.

Revealing the rationale behind the Summit’s central theme, Dr. Pachauri asserted, We are living in a world where the demand for several resources is growing faster than the addition to their reserves. High resource use intensity is also associated with economic inefficiency. Hence, improving the efficiency of use of resources in an economy can often be achieved at low or negative cost, thereby providing economic gains. Most importantly, using resources efficiently also makes it possible for the poor to gain access to them, which otherwise they may not be able to afford.

According to numerous studies, India—like many other nations—is staring at an impending scarcity in the wake of increasing and unplanned consumption of non-renewable resources. A TERI study had indicated that the total commercial energy consumption in India would increase by 7.5 times between 2001 and 2031, under a business as usual scenario. In addition, imports of coal, oil and gas are also expected to increase manifold in the next couple of decades.

To overcome this stark situation, the need of the hour is to identify and address the systemic roadblocks to sustainable development. Undoubtedly, framing strong policies and ensuring their effective implementation will require unprecedented levels of cooperation between international governments. Through the DSDS series, TERI aims to herald this much-needed change by enabling nations, scientists, experts and policymakers to join hands in saving the planet.

Launched in 2001, TERI’s flagship event, the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS), has evolved into a global forum where Heads of State, Nobel Laureates, international policymakers, heads of multilateral institutions and corporate bodies, celebrities, youth and concerned citizens converge to discuss globally-relevant issues.

Since its inception, the DSDS series has enjoyed support and participation from over 33 heads of state and ministers from more than 43 countries, exemplifying its global appeal and relevance.
